Embracing New Technology Tips

Embracing new technology can feel like you are opening a door to a world that is constantly changing which can cause it to feel overwhelming. Technology has a bright side as it allows for new ways to stay connected, be informed, and feel empowered. For many seniors, the greatest challenge is not in the ability to learn new technology, but it is the confidence in themselves to learn something new. Seniors have seen a drastic change and rapid growth in technology throughout their lives which contributes to those weary feelings. You can do it though! With a few simple strategies, learning new technology can be enjoyable and enhance aspects of daily life.

Let’s start by choosing one device or app to focus on learning at a time. This could be a smartphone, tablet, television, video-chat, messaging apps, or even an online game. Focusing on a single skill will help prevent overwhelming feelings and allows for growth as you accomplish new skills with your chosen technology. There are also free classes typically offered by libraries, senior centers, and community groups to create a supportive learning environment to enhance technological skills. Also, you could ask a grandchild or tech-savvy loved one for help in mastering your skills which would also allow you to connect and spend time with someone you loved. It could be a fond memory to think of the next time you’re using the technology they helped you learn as it could bring you closer together.

Another helpful tip is to practice consistently. Set aside small, manageable times to practice the skills you have learned. This could be ten minutes per day that you spend sending a text message, using an app, or browsing the internet. This will grow a sense of familiarity to further lessen feeling overwhelmed. Also, keeping written notes of instructions for yourself is a good reference to use when navigating the technology as it will make it easier and reduce frustration.

Lastly, a crucial tip in learning new technology is to learn about online safety. Take time to learn about strong passwords, phishing messages, and avoid unfamiliar links to protect your personal information. Many devices have precautions to help ensure your protection such as two-factor authentication and other built-in accessibility features to help you.

Most of all, remember that learning something new at any age is an achievement worth celebrating. Technology is not about keeping up, it is about connection, creativity, and independence. Share your knowledge with friends to help them gain more confidence in their technological skills.
